Conclusion of chapter 2: "Organic Farming and the Environment" 7 Conclusion The findings of this study show that organic farming provides a wide range of environmental services. The main results may be summarised as follows: 1. Organic matter content is usually higher in organically managed soils indicating a higher fertility and stability of organic soils, thus reducing the risk of erosion. 2. Organically farmed soils have significantly higher biological activity and a higher total mass of micro-organisms. As a consequence of the higher activity of micro-organisms, in organically managed soils nutrients are recycled faster and soil structure is improved. 3. Organic farming poses no risk of ground and surface water pollution through synthetic... |

The report presents the current (2005) status of organic farming resarch in Switzerland. Switzerland has a long history of organic farming research, which in its beginnings has been carried out by organic farming pioneers and by private institutions like the Goetheanum, Möschberg Centre and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL). It was in the 1990s, when Swiss Federal Agricultural Research Stations (Agroscope) became also involved in organic research topics. It can be estimated that currently approximately € 7.5 million per annum are allocated very specifically to organic farming research from public budgets. The National Research Programme is organised according to a four-year research concept of the Swiss Federal Office of... |

Ecological justice is a challenging concept in relation to the current development of agriculture, because it positions social and ecological interests against market liberalism and economic growth. Ecological justice concerns fairness with regard to the common environment based on the idea that environments are fundamen-tally shared. This chapter investigates the role that ecological justice may have in relation to the global challenges of organic agriculture. We perform a philoso-phical analysis of the ethics of ecological justice and the relation to sustainability and globalization. On this basis, we discuss the challenges that this important concept poses to organic agriculture and how it can be put into organic practice. Organic agriculture is in an... |

Organic agriculture is a tangible effort toward a more sustainable food production. However, modern European organic agriculture is faced with growing globalisation and it is undergoing a continuous technological and structural modernisation. And, even though there are large differences, the same is to some degree true for agriculture in developing countries. This chapter is the first step in an investigation of the role that organic agriculture may play in relation to sustainable development and global food security. We outline a global perspective on the development of organic food systems in consideration of different understandings of globalisation and sustainable development, as found in market liberalism, ecological economy and political ecology.... |

Yams (Dioscorea spp.) are widely grown throughout the tropics. Three yam species constitute the staple for more than 60 million people in five West African coastal countries, where more than 90% of the world's production takes place. Here we give a general introduction to yams, including their origin and geographic distribution as well as different types of yams common in Africa and Asia, and outline their uses. However, the main body in this chapter pertains to the agricultural production practices, including information on climatic requirements, soil type and land preparation, propagation, agronomic practices, pests and diseases (and their control), harvesting, curing and storage. Finally, we elaborate on the need for future research, in particular on... |

The growing demand for cocoa beans and products worldwide has been met by expanding the area under cocoa production while productivity per hectare has stagnated at a low level of around 450 kg/ha per year in the last decade. Throughout the tropics cocoa has increasingly been cultivated in full-sun monocultures in order to maximize short-term productivity and profitability, which has been associated with soil erosion and degradation, biodiversity loss, as well as increased susceptibility to climate change impacts and pests and diseases. Dynamic agroforestry systems are an alternative production method which has long been practiced in Latin American countries such as Bolivia. Through mimicking natural forests, these systems offer multiple benefits such as... |

Increasing concerns about global food security, depleting fossil reserves and diminishing natural resources question the continuation of energy-intensive conventional agriculture and emphasize the importance of sustainable alternatives such as organic agriculture. Even though organic farming is more ecologically sustainable and often economically advantageous, widespread adoption is limited as farmers making adoption-decisions are faced with challenging trade-offs (e.g. lower yields in the short term, limited options for crop nutrition and pest control and non-existence of markets for organic produce). This highlights the importance of innovation platforms involving relevant stakeholders (farmers, researchers, extensionists, etc.) in decision-making... |
